Streetwave Methodology

Streetwave’s mission is to report the consumer experience of mobile networks across the places people live, work and travel. We are independent, objective in our reporting and interpret all data following scientific processes. Each mobile network is measured using the same consistent methodology, and to ensure fairness, these measurements are taken in the same place, at the same time, using the same mobile devices.
Streetwave Mobile Network Coverage and Network Performance Mapping
In this methodology document we explain the definitions of the metrics we use in our reports, how we collect the data, how we ensure the data is valid, how the results of the data are interpreted, and why being independent is fundamental to what we do.
Metrics used in Streetwave Reports
Real-World Download Speed
Download speeds are measured in Mbps (megabits per second) and Streetwave’s Real-World Download Speed gives the average download speed experienced during Streetwave’s user assessments.
Real-World Upload Speed
Upload speeds are measured in Mbps and Streetwave’s Real-World Upload Speed gives the average upload speed experienced during Streetwave’s user assessments.
Real-World Data Coverage
Data Coverage is calculated as a percentage. To score 100% a network must provide 5 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload speed in all locations during Streetwave’s user assessments.
Residential Addresses Won
Streetwave determines the operator(s) that wins the ‘Fastest Network’ for a residential address by using the Streetwave Speed Score from the street where the residential address is found (or the segment of the street if the street is long). This score takes the median download and upload speed experience of each mobile network to rank for network speed performance. We weight the Streetwave Speed Score as follows; 75% to download speed experience and 25% to upload speed experience. We prioritize the download speed experience as it provides a strong indication of the typical user experience on the network. By emphasising download speed, we encapsulate the core of how the majority of people interact with their network.
Commercial Addresses Won
Streetwave determines the operator(s) that wins the ‘Fastest Network’ for a commercial address by using the Streetwave Speed Score from the street where the commercial address is found (or the segment of the street if the street is long).
Streetwave’s Data Collection Approach
Overview
Streetwave’s data collection model has one simple objective, to be able to collect data on a address-by-address basis. With this objective in mind, Streetwave developed the capability to build the world’s most detailed datasets in targeted consumer regions.

Representing real-world consumer experience is fundamental to Streetwave’s approach. This is why we have a strict policy on only using modern chipsets. We are also network generation agnostic, meaning we don’t prioritise any connection technology type (2G-5G) but allow each network provider to manage us in the same way a consumer would be managed by the network, ensuring real-world experience is represented.

Streetwave has the upmost respect for consumer’s data privacy. The Founding team built Streetwave on the principle of being consumer centric. We achieve this by providing independent and objective insights about the mobile networks. Our insights help drive improvements in mobile experience for consumers around the world. Given this, we actively avoid collecting data using consumers themselves (crowd sourcing), so consumer privacy and data plans are fully respected.

Active speed measurements
Streetwave uses a fixed file size to download and upload when running active speed measurements.
Data Processing and Analysis Techniques
Streetwave follows a thorough scientific processing system that is made up of a number of steps that safeguards the quality of the data. For example, we remove any location data anomalies from areas where we know data has not been collected from. After this process has been followed, the Streetwave Speed Score is applied as previously covered above.

The Scientific Process Governing Interpretations
Confidence Intervals
When comparing networks, we compute confidence intervals that offer upper and lower estimates of the true value. These intervals are determined using standard techniques and take into account the sample size of measurements. By providing confidence intervals, we gauge the precision of our data and establish a range within which the true value is probable to sit within, incorporating the entirety of the data.

Statistical Significance
In cases where the confidence intervals of two or more operators overlap, we regard the result as a statistical draw. This is because the perceived advantage of one operator may not be statistically significant, implying that it could be attributed to random variation. Consequently, we would recognise multiple winners for a Streetwave award.
Independence Declaration
Streetwave’s mission is to accurately report the real-world mobile experience across the places consumers live, work and travel. Streetwave was founded on the principle of being consumer centric. We achieve this by providing independent and objective insights about the mobile networks. Streetwave is a completely independent company, and we are not owned directly or indirectly by any network operator.

Equal Opportunity
- Streetwave sells independent insights that any organisation can subscribe to.

Reports Free from Commercial Influence
- Streetwave will never accept payments in exchange for promises to enhance or exert any influence on behalf of a company.

Objective and Fair Interpretation
- Streetwave fully controls the data collection, processing and scientific interpretation of results for reports. Every aspect of what we do is standardised for each network we analyse.

Citation Policy
- Any third party that wishes to cite Streetwave reports can request permission in advance of publishing and will be treated equally. All citing of Streetwave insights, analysis and reports must be done “as is” and without alteration.
